Position Summary:
The Customs and Border Protection Officer is responsible for safeguarding our nation's borders and ensuring the lawful and efficient movement of people, goods, and vehicles. This role requires enforcing federal laws and regulations related to customs, immigration, and agriculture, while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and integrity.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct inspections and examinations of individuals, vehicles, and cargo entering or leaving the United States to ensure compliance with customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
2. Interact with travelers and the general public to provide information, assistance, and guidance regarding entry requirements, customs procedures, and prohibited or restricted items.
3. Utilize various screening and detection technologies, such as X-ray machines, radiation detection devices, and canine teams, to identify and prevent the entry of illicit goods, narcotics, contraband, and potential threats.
4. Identify and apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities, such as smuggling, human trafficking, or terrorism, and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies as necessary.
5. Collect and analyze intelligence related to border security threats and assist in the development of strategies for enhancing border protection.
6. Prepare detailed reports, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance with administrative procedures and documentation requirements.
7. Collaborate with other Customs and Border Protection Officers, as well as federal, state, and local agencies, to support joint operations and enhance border security efforts.
8. Participate in training programs, workshops, and professional development activities to enhance knowledge of customs, immigration, and agriculture laws, as well as law enforcement techniques and technologies.
9. Adhere to all established policies, procedures, and ethical standards to maintain the highest level of professionalism and integrity.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, or a related field is preferred.
2. Must be a U.S. citizen and possess a valid driver's license.
3. Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
4. Strong knowledge of federal laws and regulations related to customs, immigration, and agriculture.
5. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse individuals and groups.
6. Proficient in using technology and operating screening equipment, such as X-ray machines and radiation detection devices.
7. Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations, make quick decisions, and respond to emergencies effectively.
8. Strong observational and analytical skills, with the ability to identify suspicious behavior, detect contraband, and assess potential threats.
9. Physical fitness and the ability to pass a rigorous physical examination, including vision and hearing tests.
10. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to collaboration and cooperation.
11. Flexibility to work irregular shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and the ability to travel as required.
